Lesson 3: Sacramental Learning

What is a Sacrament?

During sacramental learning weeks we will cover lessons that pertain to sacramental preparation. We have one child in the first year of Confirmation preparation and this will be a main focus; thinking about Confirmation. Our lessons will be varied and not necessarily align with our parish’s lesson plans for the sacramental learning week. It is our intention to put together something entirely different from the FFF lessons at the parish.

With our first sacramental learning week we are going to start from the beginning. Basics are a great start and we will be using the St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism book #2 for many of these weeks.

What is a sacrament? A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.

Jesus breathed on His Apostles and told them to receive the HOLY SPIRIT making them the first bishops. It is through them and their successors that Jesus gives us the sacramental life.

How many sacraments are there? Make a list of the ones you can name in your notebook.

Color and glue this “Sacraments make the invisible visible” sheet into your notebook.

Next we are going to review the following chart “Sacrament Signs and Actions” that outlines all 7 sacraments. This sheet is a really good visual to see all of them together. Trim this sheet and glue inside your notebook for future reference.

Feel free to go deeper on the topic of sacraments. You can break it down into 3 days focusing on the sacraments of Initiation one day, sacraments of healing and reconciliation the second day, and sacraments of service and communion on the final day. Or you may even go as far as stretching this lesson into 7 mini-lessons each focusing on one sacrament. Our lesson is meant to be a short review and reminder for our children about sacraments.
